Bloopers

Introduction:

A blooper is a short clip from the movie or video production, usually a deleted scene containing a mistake made by the cast or crew. It also relates to an error made by a person during the shooting of movies, dramas, TV-Series, and reading live news. An outtake, also known as a blooper, is a short clip or a scene that was recorded but not included in the final version of the product such as movies, tv series, and reading news, etc.

 

History:

United States

The word ‘Blooper’ was first used in the early 1940s in the theater world. But Blooper was popularized in the 1950s and 1960s in the famous series of Record Albums that was produced by Kermit Schaffer, a famous movie producer and entitled by Pardon My Blooper, one of the greatest series ever of bloopers that will always remember in our mind as well as in our hearts. Schaffer also transcript a lot of bloopers into a series of books that were published up until his death in 1979. Recently in 2003, The Warner Brother Studio Tour included a screening of bloopers from the famous movies in their tour.

United Kingdom

Jonathon Hewat (1938-2014) was the first person in the history of UK to officially broadcast the radio bloopers, on a Bank Holiday show on the BBC Radio Bristol at the end of the 1980s.

He hosted the half-hour show on that station called So You want to Run a Radio Station? His show was also nominated for Sony Awards. At first, the mistakes during outtakes kept secrets but it came to the attention at BBC Radio 2 by him.

 

Facts about Bloopers:

  • Bloopers are mostly shown at the very end of the movie. Prominent example of films with bloopers are include Cheaper the Dozen and Rush Hour. Jackie Chan, Tom Cruise, The Rock and Burt Reynolds are famous for bloopers or outtakes or reel gages.
  • Most of the time, bloopers are the most famous scene of the movies. In addition to this, they remember in the viewers’ mind for a very long time. These are the mistakes but sometimes it makes great humor in the movies, TV series, or reading news as well.
  • Recently, many CGI-Animated films have also introduced bloopers in their movies. These movies include the fake or mix bloopers, genuine voice mistakes of most famous actors or actresses used for making things funny, and technical errors as well.
  • Examples of the bloopers can be found in A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monster, Baby Day Out, Valiant, Some Barbie films, and the most famous Bollywood movies such as PK, 3 idiots, Namaste England and Roadside Romeo.

 

Causes:

  1. Bloopers are mistakes and humorous. When actors need to memorize the large dialogue consisting of many lines within a few minutes, mistakes can be expected. Similarly, Newsreaders have a very short time to share very large information with their audience so it possible that they can make mistakes while reading such as Mispronounce a person or place name, skip the words or sometimes the sentences without realizing it, because of less time and slip of tongue.

  • Forgotten script
  • Forgotten lines
  • Prank
  1. The second cause of bloopers or out-takes are Children and Animals. Mostly, Child actors forget the lines or script. And the animals are also not behaving in the same way as in the script.
  2. The third cause of blooper is the failure of Inanimate objects. Sometimes, the microphone is not working well. In addition to this, there might be a problem with shooting cameras.
  3. The fourth and very interesting reason is the Mobile Phones of actors, actresses, producers, or directors themselves. Sometimes, they forget to turn off or put their phone on Silent Mode. However, this cause of blooper experience in rare cases. But nowadays, it is mostly used in fake bloopers for animations.

 

Acceptance of Bloopers:

The publication of bloopers, out-takes, gag reels have mixed opinion from starting. Some actors, actresses, producers and directors like to public their mistakes. Conversely, others have entirely opposite mindset and demanding to keep their mistakes to themselves. Moreover, also refuse to allow them to made public.

Director Hal Ashby is the first person who officially accepted the bloopers, out-takes, or gag reel. He decided to include the blooper of star Peter Seller in his film Being There, one of the greatest movies ever in history. He faced a lot of criticism from his fellow directors and producers, producer Gene Roddenberry, Leonard Nimoy, and many other actors. But Sir Hal Ashy determined on his decision to the publication of bloopers so an actor feels easy if they make mistakes during shooting. At last, He succeeded and got great fame and still remember in our hearts.

 

News Bloopers:

The mistakes that are done by the newsreader or the news anchors, are known as the News bloopers. In some cases, the news bloopers become very funny or humorous and sometimes, it becomes an embarrassment or disgrace for News Reader or News Anchor.

 

Movie Bloopers:

Movie bloopers are the most common types of bloopers. The short clip or part of the movie that creates humor or joy for the audience is Movie blooper. Most of the scenes of the movies that remain in our minds are the mistakes. The movie bloopers or out-takes or gag reel publish at the very end of the movie just to create humor and tell their audience about the shooting process.
